BRE CICM University of Bath, UK: Seminar “Self-healing Bituminous Materials Based on Waste”
Date: April 28, 2021

BRE Centre for Innovative Construction Materials (BRE CICM) presents seminars from leading speakers covering a broad theme of sustainable innovative construction materials and technologies.

Speaker: Dr. Jose Norambuena-Contreras
Affiliation: Universidad del Bío-Bío, Chile

Self-healing bituminous materials are a promising approach to increase the lifespan of asphalt roads. This talk presents an overview of the LabMAT research focused on the different technologies to promote the self-healing capability in bituminous materials from a vision of the waste valorisation for more sustainable and resilient road infrastructure. This research includes the crack-healing by externally triggered heating by magnetic field technologies and addition of metallic waste, such as induction heating and microwave, and the progress in the recent research on biopolymer microcapsules containing waste-based rejuvenators to activate crack-healing by the effect of reconstitution of the chemical composition of the binder.
